The Magnetically-Charged Miss M. Webcomic!

Miss M., then known as Nelvana, first appeared in Northern Adventures Quarterly #1 in the summer of 2012.  Hers was one of three stories in the book, along with tales of The Guard and Zodiac.

Frozen Light Comics recently began displaying webcomics, one page at a time, every few days, on its website.  Miss M.'s introductory tale is now getting that treatment with the first page posted yesterday (copied below) and the next coming on Thursday.
The full book can be purchased digitally (pdf) on drivethru and in print through Indyplanet.

Miss M.'s creator, Andre St-Amour, has also been applying his considerable talents towards illustrating short stories about the Heroes of the North characters (existing and forthcoming).  Here's a page from the Saskana short.

See more of André's work on his deviantart page and check back with FLC Webcomics to see more of Miss M.!

Frozen Light Comics gearing up for 2013

Frozen Light Comics, based out of the Ottawa region, fired off a couple of teaser posts this morning.

The first was a larger version of the cover to Northern Adventure Quarterly #2.  It had been displayed on the last page of the first issue (which you can, and should, get from FLC's website), but we get a better look at it now.  Right click the thumbnail to open a larger version in a new tab or window.

The second post was almost entirely new preview material.  Late last year, FLC announced a second title called "Lady Black".  It looks like that book is well on its way too; publisher (writer, artist...pretty much everything else...) André St-Amour showed us several pages this afternoon.  I am displaying one below, but click on this link, or the Lady Black image, to see the rest.

This looks like a nice complement to NAQ; darker in tone but not graphically so (so remaining in the "all ages" category).  No doubt St-Amour has more tricks up his sleeve so I'm looking forward to finding out what else will emerge from Frozen Light.

Early Sneak Peek; Lady Black

The image below was being distributed by Frozen Light Comics earlier this week.  No word as of yet as to a tentative release date, unfortunately.

This is the second series from Frozen Light, on the heels of Northern Adventures Quarterly.

The second issue of that NAQ was originally intended to be ready for November, but name changes for a couple of the character were required, which caused a delay.  The Canadian Shield is now simply known as The Guard, while Nelvana is goes by Miss M.

Help Self-Publisher Magazine Help You!

I came across a mention of Self-Publisher! magazine on the Surprising Comics message board some time ago.  Thinking it may provide an introduction to other indy book, but also that I would likely forget to ever check in again, I signed up for their newsletter.

I received the latest one earlier this week and figured it might be of interest to those who are directly involved in "the business" in whatever capacity.  Here is an abbreviated version (the full version, as I write this, appears on their front page):

...I dumped the way we had news displayed, because for one, very few people send in news releases.

So in reality, we are looking for MORE: More article writers, more people TO be featured, more things to review and more people to review those things. SP! is looking at increasing readership by multiples of it's current readership, and we're inviting everyone along for the ride. SP! Will continue to be "by the people for the people" - we're just going to have more people reading, and participating. What's in it for the people making new content? Well, readers. If you are ALREADY doing coverage of indy stuff, let's talk...we'll promote your site as part of our family.
There may not be many people submitting news, but it seems our friends at Frozen Light Comics are among those who have taken advantage of the opportunity.  As they should; There's absolutely nothing to lose so may as well leave no stone unturned.  Failing that, if writing a press release is not really your thing, then submit your book to be reviewed.  In whatever way you choose to do so, it's a chance for more exposure, so why not take it?

Continuing to be specific to the Canadian character theme of this blog, issue #58 includes an interview with John Michael Helmer of Red Leaf Comics.  It is quite thorough, touching on the company's beginnings, past collaborations, present and future projects for its various characters, etc. Check that out, then see if any of the books featured in the reviews and previews strike your fancy.  There is a wide variety of styles on display and opportunities to support indy talent (Canadian or otherwise).

"Canada Gets Its Own New Amazing Heroes!"

This is a press release from a new publisher that I was made aware of earlier today.  Thanks to Red Leaf comics' John Helmer for bringing it my attention.
Frozen Light Comics' first comic-book title Northern Adventure Quarterly is a 28 page, full-color, action-packed, fun-filled comics series for readers of all ages. Every issue of Northern Adventure Quarterly stars The Canadian Shield, features Nelvana and introduces a third hero - Zodiac, in the first issue, Stampede in the second, and others in subsequent issues.

Frozen Light Comics' mission is to bring back fun into super-hero comics, to make super-hero comics accessible to the youngest and oldest readers alike, and to put the emphasis on action and adventure back into super-hero comics and stories.
